Most people are unedstanding copyright in terms of property rights, but due to the influence of the RIAA and friends, they have it backwards.

In the absence of copyrights, if I buy a CD, I can do anything I like with it.
Give a copyright holder a monopoly on performances, and that's one less use I get out of my property.
Give a copyright holder a monopoly on broadcasting, and that's another use I can no longer make of my property.
Give a copyright holder a monopoly on reproduction, and that's another use I can no longer make of my property.
Give a copyright holder a monopoly on "making available", etc, etc.

The "stronger" we make copyright, the less useful and therefore less valuable our physical property becomes.
