Alvin Velazquez (Indiana University Maurer School of Law) has posted Advocating for Jubilee in the Midst of Colonization on SSRN. Here is the abstract:
This Essay presents a theological explanation rooted in the Christian tradition for debt forgiveness in governmental bankruptcies. The Essay argues that in the case of Puerto Rico debt jubilee was an appropriate goal to advocate for given its history as a colony of the United States. Additionally, this Essay provides a theological justification for why governmental bankruptcies should provide a preference for the rights of workers and retirees. The Essay provides personal, autobiographical reflections about how these theological commitments informed the author's advocacy in the Puerto Rico bankruptcy.
